If you have watched any of my Ghost Recon Breakpoint runs, you already know I have a soft spot for this series that borders on a problem. So the latest word on the next Ghost Recon, codenamed Project Over, has me equal parts hopeful and nervous.
Here is what we actually know. Project Over is Ubisoft’s next Ghost Recon, and the big shift is that it is reportedly going first person, built on Unreal Engine 5 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. On paper that is a massive change for a series I have always played in third person, no HUD, immersive mode. First-person tactical done properly could be incredible. First-person tactical done lazily could strip out everything that makes Ghost Recon feel like Ghost Recon.
The problem is what is happening behind the scenes. Reports point to a project in real trouble. Red Storm Entertainment, one of the studios on it, was shut down in May 2026 with around 105 layoffs, and that landed mid-development. A leaked internal memo from June 12 reportedly describes missed alpha milestones, unrealistic deadlines and management friction, with Ubisoft sending in senior producer Bruno Galet to steady the ship. There are even whispers of a full restart or cancellation, and the release has already slipped from 2026 to a 2027 target.
What it means for us: temper the hype. I want a great Ghost Recon as badly as anyone, but a game in this state is not something to get attached to yet. The smart play is to watch it carefully, judge it on what actually ships rather than the first shiny trailer, and in the meantime keep enjoying the Breakpoint runs that still hold up better than people give them credit for.
I will be following Project Over closely and will break it down properly the second there is something real to show. Until then, the full Breakpoint archive is sitting right here: WillyB’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
