I set the new streaming distance to the maximum it can be, walked out into the Zone, and saw absolutely nobody. For ages. I wandered, I squinted, I muttered “so far, I don’t see anyone” like a man who’s been stood up at a bus stop. Then, out of nowhere, two blokes on patrol, then two more, then their whole camp, a long way off and very much awake.
“Streaming distance works, folks.” That’s what I said on camera, and I stand by it.
Update 2.1, The Zone Lookout, is GSC’s first major update since what they call the “Archmajor” 2.0. It’s mostly about seeing further, hearing further and getting shot from further, with a fast travel system and a pile of fixes on the side. I put it through its paces in the video at the top of this page, and I’ve got a slightly long winded answer to the only question that matters.
Here’s what’s new, what it felt like, and whether it’s worth coming back for.
Streaming distance, or: I can see you, and that’s the problem
The headline is an option to increase the A-Life NPC visualisation distance. You’ll find the presets under Settings, Game, Visualisation options. GSC recommends the default as the safest bet for a stable run, warns that pushing it higher may affect performance and stability, and there’s a Dynamic preset that scales the range to whatever your PC or console can handle. It’s mainly the A-Life crowd that gets the extra range, not quest or scripted characters, so this is about the people wandering the Zone rather than the story.
I didn’t do the sensible thing. I went straight to maximum, because if anyone was going to test it like this, it was always going to be me.
It changes the fear. In the past, I could run a decent distance and everyone would just stop coming after me. Not so much any more. You’re fighting people from an absolute major distance away, and that’s clearly the point. Why else would they add it? Nobody wants to look at stalkers from far away. You want to fight them. If you’re wondering why I’m fighting them, it’s because the game wants me to.
Binoculars got the memo too. GSC says they’ve been updated for the new streaming distances, and the identification range goes up when you’re on the increased setting. Their own tease on X put it nicely: “enemies are everywhere, Skif. They’re hiding behind trees!” They are. I’ve met them.
Where I’d love it to go: a second slider, for how full the world is. There’s already one for how far you can see, so why not one for how many people are out there? I’m sure the scarcity is accurate, what with the radiation and the demons, but a lot of the time I’m still wandering around and nothing’s happening. Let me ask for a busier, angrier Zone. I’ll take the consequences.
Long-range fights, or: I heard a war miles away and arrived for the credits
The notes extend the audible range of gunfights based on your streaming distance setting, and GSC’s showcase says weapon ballistics have been adjusted to match, so long-distance gunfights feel natural.
The sound is the bit I noticed. At one point I heard a fight kick off miles away and set off towards it, fully aware that by the time I got there everyone would be dead. That’s fine. Whoever the victors were, they’d still have to beat me. It sounded like a full-blown battle. Then, just like that, it was over, which is the most realistic thing that’s ever happened to me in a video game.
The ballistics do feel changed. I just couldn’t tell you how. I like it, whatever it is, and I’m not going to pretend I measured a bullet drop table with a ruler.
Where I’d love it to go: let those distant fights leave something behind for latecomers. The gunfire already travels further than it used to. If the winners are still looting when I turn up, that’s a second fight. If they’ve gone, give me the mess. Either way, the walk pays off.
The AI, or: they push in groups now and I take it personally
There’s no single “smarter AI” line in the notes, but there’s a run of AI and combat fixes that adds up. NPCs no longer aim in unintended directions. They’ll attack you even when you’re not looking right at them, which is rude and correct. They don’t get stuck in campfires or mid-air any more, their reaction to melee has been adjusted, and some covers are taller inside, which GSC says should improve how the AI uses small cover.
It’s nothing major, but the enemies do feel more intelligent. They move more intelligently. They shoot more intelligently, or at least it feels like they do. They seem to actually think about what they’re doing, and they push you in groups rather than standing around shooting in random directions.
Does it feel more tactical? Yes. Or at least I’m thinking more about how I play it, which is the same thing from where I’m crouching. I announced that I’d learned the cookie crumbles both ways. I still don’t know what that means.
If you want to see that fight, and the moment the streaming distance finally kicks in, the full video is here and right at the top of this page. It’s a lot funnier with the noises I make.
Where I’d love it to go: AI that brings friends when you’ve been loud. They already group up and push, and now they can hear a fight from much further away. Put those together and a long firefight should start pulling in whoever’s nearby. That’s when “more tactical” turns into “oh no”.
Squad leaders, or: a guide and a fare
Fast travel with squad leaders is in. Friendly or neutral squad leaders are marked on your compass, and if you talk to one they’ll guide you to nearby places you’ve already explored, but only along their own route. You pay “good cash” for it, nobody’s carrying your bag, so don’t be overloaded, and GSC’s own example is that a guy from Zalissya won’t take you all the way to Prypiat. On X, they called it “a reasonable price in coupons. Well… mostly reasonable.”
I called them guides on camera, because that’s what they are, and honestly they’re really useful. There are a lot of times I’m wandering around for ages trying to get somewhere and I just can’t. I picked a destination I’d never heard of, asked out loud where that even was, and decided I didn’t know, but let’s go.
Where I’d love it to go: squad leaders who remember you. They already have routes and they already charge. If I’ve used one a few times, knock a little off the fare. A taxi that holds a grudge is the most STALKER thing imaginable.
Anomalies and the fix list
The notes promise improvements to how anomalies work with the new systems, including streaming distance and dead body interactions, plus visual work on the CNPP arch-anomaly. The render distance of anomalies now follows your streaming distance, and the Flare light anomaly has new visual effects.
Then there’s the long list of fixes. A big run of them sorts out missing NPCs on PS5 after the 2.0 patch. DLC starting missions that couldn’t be started now can be. Several scopes with blurry textures are fixed, a memory leak from lots of map markers is gone, and foggy days aren’t too bright any more. GSC says they planned the whole update from feedback on social media, forums and reviews, and if you play with mods, they recommend disabling them if you hit stability problems.
And yes, I explored a little house and found the craziest steak I’ve ever seen. That’s one thing this game does really well. However much of it you’ve played, there’s still so much to find. Am I going to use the steak? No. But alas.
The bit where I’m fair
This is a quality of life update, not a reinvention, and it’d be daft to sell it as anything else. I wished out loud for more people out there, and that’s with the distance on maximum.
From what I’ve read, that lines up with what players had been asking for. After 2.0 there was a long r/stalker thread about the A-Life bubble still being too small, and a fair, commonly raised point in it was that the distance matters, but so does what the AI actually does inside it. 2.1 has a go at both. Squad leader travel has gone down well, with DualShockers calling it a fan favourite back from Call of Pripyat and reporting positive feedback across platforms. Coverage like GameClimate’s also repeats GSC’s warning that the higher presets cost something, and suggests sticking with the default, or making a fresh save before you try a higher preset, if you’re mid-campaign. GameWatcher, who weren’t kind to the launch, now say the game’s in a much better place.
None of that’s a reason to stop playing. It’s a reason to ask for the second slider.
The verdict
Is Update 2.1 on its own worth coming back for? Probably not. If you gave up after 2.0, this isn’t the thing that changes your mind. It’s a nice addition, though, and if you already love this game, like I do, it’s a proper quality of life upgrade. The Zone reaches further, the fights carry, the guides save your legs, and the AI feels more tactical.
But is 2.0 worth coming back for? Absolutely. So if you didn’t come back for 2.0, come back now, because 2.0 changed a lot of things and 2.1 sits on top of it. That’s a very long winded way of saying yes. Do come back. Also, don’t if you don’t want to, because I can’t make you do anything.

FAQ
Is STALKER 2 Update 2.1 worth coming back for?
On its own, probably not. It's a nice quality of life update if you already play, and the AI feels more tactical. But if you skipped Update 2.0, come back now, because 2.0 changed a lot and 2.1 sits on top of it.
What does Update 2.1 The Zone Lookout add?
GSC's notes list an option to raise the A-Life NPC visualisation distance, binoculars updated for the new streaming distances, fast travel with squad leaders, and anomaly improvements, plus AI and combat fixes and a long list of bug fixes.
Where is the A-Life streaming distance setting in STALKER 2?
GSC says it's under Settings, Game, Visualisation options. They recommend the default preset for stability, say higher presets may affect performance and stability, and offer a Dynamic preset that scales to your hardware. I ran mine on maximum.
How does squad leader fast travel work in STALKER 2?
Friendly or neutral squad leaders are marked on your compass. Talk to one and they'll take you to nearby places you've already explored, along their own route. You pay for it, and you can't be overloaded.
Is there a WillyB video of STALKER 2 Update 2.1?
Yes, it's the film at the top of this page. My earlier one, Is STALKER 2 Update 2.0 Worth Coming Back For?, is at /videos/is-stalker-2-update-2-0-worth-coming-back-for-LNA_HhbPZkA/.
