Search “is Helldivers 2 crossplay” and every result fires back the same one-word answer: yes. Tick the box, job done, next question. And it is true, but that one word hides the bit that actually bites you, which is the difference between crossPLAY and crossPROGRESSION. Those are two completely separate things, and conflating them is how people end up grinding the same warbond twice on two different boxes.

So here is the cut that actually matters. Crossplay is fully in across PC (Steam), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it has been on by default since the relevant launch on each platform. Cross-progression is not in, has never been in, and Arrowhead has said it has no plans for it “currently.” That second sentence is the one you need to plan around before you buy on a second platform or talk a mate into joining you.

First, the crossplay part, the good news. Helldivers 2 matchmakes you with everyone, everywhere, by default. You do not flip a setting, you do not pick a region-locked pool, you just queue and the game pulls divers off Steam, PS5 and Xbox into the same lobby. (There is a toggle to disable crossplay if you ever want Xbox-only or PlayStation-only lobbies, but you never have to touch it.) The Xbox Series X|S version landed on 26 August 2025 with full cross-play baked in from minute one, so there is no awkward “Xbox players over here” island, Xbox, PlayStation and PC all share the galaxy. How you actually squad up with a specific mate. Matchmaking will throw you in with strangers across platforms automatically, but to deliberately play with your friend on another box you use the in-game Friend Code. Open the Social menu, scroll to the bottom of your friend list, and there is your 8-digit code. You swap codes, they punch yours in to send a request, you accept, and from then on you can invite each other into a squad of up to four no matter whose machine is whose. It is platform-agnostic on purpose, it does not care about Steam friends lists, PSN or Xbox Live. And no, you do not need a linked PSN account on PC for any of this; crossplay and the friend-code system work regardless.

Now the part the lazy lists skip, cross-progression. There is none. Your level, your Super Credits, your Requisition, your warbonds, your sample stockpile, all of it is chained to the platform you earned it on. Buy the game on Xbox after putting 200 hours into the PS5 version and you start from absolute zero. You are a fresh recruit with a Liberator and nothing else. There is no transfer, no cross-save, no account merge. Arrowhead’s line hasn’t budged: the community team says there are “no plans” for it currently, and while the CEO has admitted the studio would “love to” add cross-platform progression, it keeps losing out to performance and bug-fixing work. As of mid-2026 that is still the stated position, and it has held consistent from the PS5/PC days right through the Xbox launch. So treat your platform choice as permanent for progression purposes, pick where your mates play and where you intend to stay.

The practical upshot for a solo diver. This combo is genuinely great for the way most of us actually play. Because crossplay is automatic and the squad cap is four, you are never starved for a fireteam regardless of platform, and if you would rather go in alone, you can simply not invite anyone and run lower-difficulty operations solo (just know the Helldivers loop is balanced around four, so a one-diver run is a deliberate handicap, not a supported “solo campaign”).
