Can You Play Watch Dogs 2 Co-op?

Can you play Watch Dogs 2 co-op? Yes. You can drop into San Francisco with another DedSec menace, run cooperative missions, and later on you could even do that with four people. You cannot play the main story as a shared campaign. That split is the whole useful answer.

The honest caveat first. This is not Far Cry 5 co-op. In Far Cry 5 the guest does not keep the story, which I already grumbled about in can you play Far Cry 5 co-op. In Watch Dogs 2 the story was never really on the table. Marcus’s campaign is single-player. Co-op is the city as a playground: side jobs, chaos, two people over-hacking a street because they can. If you bought it to sit on a sofa and finish the plot together, you bought the wrong open world.

What Ubisoft actually shipped. Their help page lists the online toys: seamless co-op encounters around the Bay, bounty hunts if you make too much noise, and cooperative missions you can invite a friend into. In 2017 they added four-player free roam in update 1.16 and, unusually for that era of Ubisoft, they did not charge extra for it. PC Gamer covered that drop at the time. Ten years later the features are still in the game. The living population is the bit I will not pretend I measured this morning.

How I actually play it. Alone. That is the Watch Dogs 2 worth it verdict and the resurgence piece. Free roam, cheap on sale, hacking as a toy box, no forced grind. Co-op is a button I am glad exists and rarely need. The hold-up run on the channel, Does Watch Dogs 2 Still Hold Up, is a solo argument. I am not going to fake a four-stack I did not record.

Online requirements, without the myth. Consoles want the usual Plus or Game Pass Core style subscription for the co-op missions, per Ubisoft. PC wants you signed in. Turn the network off and you still have the story and the map. You lose the other players, the bounties, the random DedSec in your session. For a 2016 game in 2026 that is a fair trade. The servers have good days and museum days.

Bounty Hunt is the other online toy, and I mention it so nobody is surprised. Cause enough chaos and other players can get dropped into your city as hunters, with the police helping them ruin your evening. Fun once. Annoying if you came to photograph a parkour line. You can tighten the online settings. I do, because I came back for the sandbox, not for a 2016 PvP mode that still thinks it is clever.

Who this is for. Mates who both already own it and want a stupid evening in Oakland. People comparing it to Legion or to Far Cry before they invite someone. If you are buying Watch Dogs 2 in 2026, buy it for solo free roam while you wait for GTA 6. Co-op is gravy. Legion is a different, worse conversation, and I already had it in Watch Dogs 2 vs Legion. The original Watch Dogs is a third conversation, and that is is Watch Dogs worth it in 2026.

If your friend only owns Legion, do not use co-op as the pitch to make them buy 2. Use the city. Use the tone. Use the fact it is cheap. Then if they want to mess about online after the story, the button is there.

The verdict? Yes, you can play Watch Dogs 2 co-op. No, that is not why it is worth it. Play the city. Invite a friend if they promise not to blow the first drone they see. The rest is on the Watch Dogs 2 hub.

FAQ

Can you play Watch Dogs 2 co-op?

Yes. You can team up for cooperative missions and roam San Francisco with other players. Ubisoft later added four-player free roam in a free update. The main DedSec story is still a single-player campaign.

Is the Watch Dogs 2 campaign co-op?

No. The story is Marcus's. Co-op is side activity: missions, chaos, hacking the city with a mate. If you want a shared campaign like some Far Cry sessions, this is not that, and I already wrote the Far Cry 5 version of that warning.

How many players can play Watch Dogs 2 together?

Originally two for a lot of the seamless stuff. Update 1.16 added four-player co-op free roam, and Ubisoft shipped that as a free update rather than paid DLC. Check your platform still has a living player pool before you plan a night.

Do you need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live for Watch Dogs 2 co-op?

On consoles, Ubisoft's own help page says co-op missions need the usual online subscription. PC is the Ubisoft Connect online requirement instead. Offline, you keep the story and the city. You lose the other hackers.

Is Watch Dogs 2 better solo or in co-op?

Solo, for the game I keep recommending. The city is the toy. Co-op is extra. I came back to it in 2026 for free roam, not for a squad.
