The Division 2 Endgame and Build Primer: Gearing Up at Level 40

So you hit level 40 and the game went quiet. The story beats stop, the level bar vanishes, and suddenly nobody is holding your hand. Welcome to the real game.

Here is the honest truth: the endgame is the game. Everything before level 40 is a tutorial wearing a trench coat. The proper loop, the one that has kept this thing alive for years, is simple to describe and deep to play: kill things, get loot, build something nasty, kill harder things. That is it. The skill is knowing which loot matters and what to ignore, because most of it is bin fodder and the game will happily bury you in it.

Builds are the whole point, and they hang on three things. First, brand sets. Each piece of gear belongs to a brand, and stacking two or three pieces of the same brand unlocks bonuses that snowball your damage, survivability or skill power. Second, talents, the special effects rolled onto weapons and gear that change how a build actually plays rather than just nudging a number. Third, the core attributes, your weapon damage, armour or skill tier, depending on what you are building toward. Get those three pulling in the same direction and a mediocre stat sheet turns into something that melts a heroic mission.

Do not chase a perfect drop. Chase a good base and fix the rest. That is what recalibration is for: you take a piece with the right brand and the right talent, then swap one underwhelming stat for a better one pulled from your library. It is the difference between hoping the loot gods smile on you and actually engineering a build on purpose. Early on you will feel poor, with nothing worth recalibrating. Stick with it. The library fills faster than you think.

Now, the shiny new thing. Year 8 Rise Up, which landed via patch 2.24, added Prototype Gear, a tier that sits above High End with roughly one and a half times the stats. In plain terms, your end goal gear ceiling just went up, so the builds you thought were finished have room to grow again. There are also Exotic weapons and gear, the named, build defining pieces with unique talents you genuinely plan around. I would treat Prototype as the long game rather than a day one expectation, because the grind is the point and it is meant to take a while.

Where do you actually spend your time? Your SHD Watch keeps levelling in the background, feeding small permanent stat bumps the longer you play, so you are never truly making zero progress. And as of April 2026 there is Escalation, a new endgame activity with ten tiers of weekly missions. It is a clean reason to log back in each week and a sensible place to test whatever monstrosity you have just cobbled together.

My one piece of advice: experiment, and do it your way. Look, the so called best builds are a starting point, not gospel. Half the joy here is finding a daft combination that should not work and absolutely does. You can grind solo at your own pace or drag a mate along in co-op, and both are valid.

If you want to see a properly tuned build get tested under real pressure, I put one through its paces in The Division 2 finally fixed its biggest problem… | The Division 2 Realism Mode.

If you want the full breakdown of what Rise Up changed, I went deep in my Year 8 Rise Up rundown. Still on the fence about the whole thing in 2026? I weighed it up honestly in is The Division 2 worth it. And everything I have on the game lives on the Division 2 hub. Go build something silly.
