I was sent Active Matter for free. I did not buy it. I am saying that first because the rest of this is a first raid on someone else’s dime, and the honest bit at the end depends on you knowing that.
I only booted Isolated PvE. Extraction with other players is not why I play. Matter Team and Gaijin shipped this on 15 September 2026, $29.99 on Steam, Isolated raids and PvPvE, anomalies, and a substance they call active matter that is supposed to bend the raid while you loot and leave. I did not know what the game was. We figured it out together. Eliminate three monsters. Explore. Then something disgusting arrived and I said, out loud, that I did not know this was a horror game.
Flower men. An invisible thing I still killed. Turned soldiers. A swamp of insects. The zone collapsing in under three minutes. Healing that sounds like dying. Magazines that take a year. I extracted with a backpack of tat, no meds, arms hurt, aiming off, and the sentence I actually meant: I am having fun, I am extremely stressed, and I think that is a good thing.
What the room is saying
It takes nerve to ship an extraction shooter in 2026. InsertCoins called it STALKER crossed with Tarkov, SCP-flavoured, and mixed, six out of ten, wait and see the economy. Technetbook liked Isolated and scored it eight. OpenCritic is a tiny sample and already split. Steam, a few days in, is Mostly Positive. People follow people. I try to follow the raid.
I am not here to recast that. I am here because I extracted and I am conflicted, which is more useful than a score I have not earned.
What actually happened
First raid I was learning the map by walking into it. Something reloaded when I did not want it to. Shooting from somewhere I could not see. A flower man. I crashed out of a fight and still said the game looks really nice. The movement is a bit different. Then an invisible man, remains, a crate of 12 gauge and .45, and I was healing so many times I asked why it sounded like I was dying.
Second raid I brought five magazines for an M4 and decided not to bring another gun. I learned that the hard way. Turned soldiers for a task. A shawty off a body. An anomaly swamp. Active matter that takes an awful long time to pull. Things that look skinned. A collapse timer. Flower men again on a photo task. Something I could not kill properly. No meds. A roof that had nothing on it. A door I could not open fast enough. Then extract, eight seconds, and I was still a fan.
The AI humans are not impressive, though they nearly killed me at the start. The mutant things are fun because they are freakishly annoying. That is the Isolated raid in one sentence.
Would I have paid?
That is the question I actually asked on the way out. I enjoy this. I will play more. There are more maps. I also said I do not know if I would be as happy if I had bought it myself, and that it feels geared more toward PvP.
That is not a no. It is a $30 asterisk. Isolated is real. The raid is a raid. If you already like this genre and you will actually use PvE, the price is a reasonable bet. If you only wanted another Tarkov with extra steps, wait a month and see if the economy still annoys people. Steam will refund you inside two hours if you hate the first raid. I did not have that test, because I did not pay.
I am not going to pretend a code makes the flower men less disgusting. It just means you should hear the money part before you hear the fun part.
Who this is for
You type is Active Matter worth playing solo, or you saw the film, or you want Isolated PvE that feels a bit like STALKER without pretending it is the Zone.
Not for: anyone who only wanted PvP and thought I was going to review that. I did not. Anyone who needs a beginner’s checklist. Buy a safe container and run Isolated until you can find extract without the map. That is the useful first hour, and it is not this page.
If you want the extraction I already live in, Gray Zone Warfare is still the one I paid for and kept. If you want the Zone, STALKER 2 is still the one. Active Matter is the new raid I will go back to, on a code, with five magazines, and a slightly guilty sense that the stress is the toy.
The camera version is the film this page is for. I extracted. I am a fan. I am not sure about the receipt.
FAQ
Is Active Matter worth playing solo?
If you want Isolated PvE, yes enough to try. I extracted having fun and stressed, which for me is the point. I was sent a code. I am not sure I would have been as happy if I had paid $30 myself. I will play more.
Does Active Matter have a PvE mode?
Yes. Isolated. That is the only reason I booted it. I do not play extraction for other players. The mode is real, not a menu trick.
Is Active Matter like STALKER?
In the raid it felt like an extraction version of STALKER, mixed with humans who are not that impressive and mutants who are freakishly annoying. The comparison is a feeling, not a clone.
How much is Active Matter?
$29.99 on Steam, buy to play. Higher editions exist and add starting kit, not a different game. I did not buy it. I was sent a code.
Should I buy Active Matter or wait?
If you already like extraction and you will actually use Isolated, $30 is a reasonable bet. If you only wanted PvP, I am the wrong person to ask. If you are on the fence, Steam's refund window covers the first two hours.
Is Active Matter PvP or PvE?
Both. PvPvE raids and Isolated PvE. I only played Isolated. The game feels built with other operators in mind. The PvE is still a proper raid.
