Operator is one of those games I keep recommending to people who want their tactical shooters genuinely hardcore, and it just got its biggest update yet. To be clear, I mean Vector Interactive’s Operator, the Tier 1 realism sim with the laptop mission planning and the full-body first person, not the unrelated narrative game with a similar name. The V0.9 update landed in early April 2026, and it is a serious step up.
The headline for me is the movement and realism overhaul, because that is the bit that decides whether a game like this feels like a real operator or just a man on rails. V0.9 added vaulting and mantling, variable crouch, a proper sprint stamina system, and the one I really care about, a full weight system. Your gear, your weapon, your mods, even your individual rounds now have weight, and it affects how you move. Load up heavy and you feel it. That is exactly the kind of detail that separates a serious milsim from a power fantasy, and it forces you to actually think about your loadout rather than just strapping on everything you own.
The content side is generous too. Three new maps came with it, including Kabul Streets, which the devs are calling their most detailed yet, dense close-quarters fighting with forty to sixty AI, heavy weapons emplacements, IEDs and a high-value target to deal with. There are four new weapons, plus reworks to recoil and suppression and camera shake. The AI got smarter as well, with new enemy types including suicide bombers, better grenade use and proper flanking and coordination. A bigger AI overhaul is apparently still to come later in the year.
What makes Operator right for this channel is that it is built for exactly how I like to play. It is a solo or co-op PvE Tier 1 sim. Realistic ballistics, injury and gore, manual weapon handling with high and low ready, mission planning before you go in. It is slow, deliberate and punishing in all the right ways, and V0.9 leans even harder into that with the weight and movement systems. This is not a game you run and gun. It is a game you plan, breach and clear, one careful room at a time.
A bit of honesty on the state of it. Operator is still in Early Access, the devs are talking about a multi-year development window, and there is no 1.0 date. So expect a game that is still being built, still rough in places, but already one of the most committed realism shooters out there, with a Very Positive standing on Steam to back that up. V0.9 launched with a discount too, so it is a good moment to get in.
If you want to see just how punishing this lot can get before you commit, I put it through the wringer in The Hardest Shooter on Steam Broke Me… | Operator.
I have been putting serious time into this one, and the full Operator run is right here: WillyB’s Operator.
