Short answer: STALKER 2 Cost of Hope and free Update 2.0 both landed on 20 August 2026. That is the date. This page is the briefing: what shipped, what is free versus paid, and which platforms. This page used to be a countdown. The window closed. The official site dated it, the Steam DLC listing matches it, and both drops are live.

The honest caveat first. This is still STALKER 2. Launch was rough. Performance and A-Life took a long time to feel like the series people fell in love with. A shipped expansion does not wipe that history, and free Update 2.0 is not a magic apology tour where every bug evaporates overnight. Treat 20 August as a real story drop plus a real tech pass. If you bounced off early and still have that taste in your mouth, fair. The current build is better than that launch. I already said the vanilla Zone did not need an update to be worth it. That still stands. Cost of Hope is extra Zone.

So what is Cost of Hope, beyond the trailer voice? It is a paid story expansion for Heart of Chornobyl, not a cosmetics pack with a fancy name. You play as Skif again. After you install it, a PDA signal during a base-game playthrough starts the new arc, so the expansion is meant to sit inside a campaign rather than off in a totally separate sandbox. Official materials put Duty and Freedom’s fragile peace, held together by the D4 Treaty until it is not, at the centre of the plot. GSC has named two long-closed regions you can finally push into: Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, described as proper territories with hubs and smaller places to poke rather than a single corridor of set pieces. They talk about dozens of hours if you chase everything. That is marketing speak, so treat it as “big,” not a stopwatch promise. New weapons, gear, mutants and anomalies are part of the pitch, and choices are meant to matter for how the chapter ends.

They have also framed Cost of Hope as the middle chapter of a second trilogy of installments, with another story expansion still to come later. That is roadmap talk. Useful colour. Not something you need sorted before you decide whether to boot the base game this week.

If you want a feel for the Zone the expansion sits on, free roam is still the real trailer. I went deeper on purpose in STALKER 2 Free Roam Is Everything I Wanted, tried to play nice and still started a war in STALKER 2 Free Roam Still Feels Completely Alive, had the whole map turn on me in The Whole Zone Is Hunting Me In STALKER 2 Free Roam, and watched A-Life go feral in STALKER 2 Is Completely Out Of Control. Now the free bit, because this is where a lot of people actually live. STALKER 2 Update 2.0, titled Back to the Zone on the official site, landed 20 August 2026 as well. Same day as the paid expansion. Update 2.0 is free for anyone who already owns the base game. GSC’s overview: a real engine-side overhaul, plus the feature list they would not give us in July. Improved visuals. Another A-Life pass, more campfires and bus stops contested, stalkers looting the fallen whether you are filming or not, and a pile of under-the-hood fixes for nonsense like shots through walls and sudden overpopulation. Custom difficulty. Binoculars. New weapons. Weather work. Zone Kit upgrades. That is the official shape. Numbered notes live on the patch notes hub. I have now run it. Platforms and money, without the store-page fog. Cost of Hope and the free 2.0 drop are lined up for PC on Steam, Epic and GOG, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire also flagged Xbox Play Anywhere for the base game and the expansion if you bounce between console and PC on that storefront. Update 2.0 is free. Cost of Hope is paid. Ultimate Edition and the Season Pass are sold as including the story expansions, Cost of Hope plus a later second expansion, along with the usual deluxe extras. If you bought Ultimate, you should not need to buy Cost of Hope again. If you only own Standard, you buy the DLC. Standalone price moves with region and sales. GamesHub had the expansion at $29.99 / €29.99 on launch day. Check the live Steam Cost of Hope page or your console store the day you buy. Should you jump in now it is out? If you already like this kind of pain, yes. Free roam is still where STALKER 2 sells itself, and arriving at Cost of Hope with a worn save is half the fun of an expansion that slots into the campaign. If you only wanted the patch, install 2.0 and stop there. If you need polished, stable and predictable, this is still STALKER. Perfect is not the product.
