STALKER 2 is one of my favourite survival experiences, but it does not hold your hand, and it will absolutely punish a newcomer who treats it like a normal shooter. The Zone has a dozen ways to kill you that have nothing to do with bullets. So here are the survival tips I wish I had known going in, to get you through those brutal first hours.
The Zone itself is the enemy, not just the people in it. Before you worry about combat, worry about the environment. Anomalies are invisible or barely visible hazards that will end you instantly if you walk into them. Throw a bolt ahead of you when something feels off, watch how it reacts, and learn to read the warning signs. Radiation is a constant threat too, so keep an eye on your geiger counter, carry anti-rad supplies, and do not loiter in hot zones.
Manage your needs. This is a survival game, so you have to eat, you have to sleep, and you have to keep yourself patched up. Always carry food, medkits and bandages, and deal with bleeding immediately because it will drain you fast. Running into a fight low on supplies is a quick way to die from something you could have prevented.
Watch your weight. You can only carry so much before you become overloaded, which slows you to a crawl and leaves you a sitting duck. Be ruthless about what you pick up. Loot is only useful if you can carry it back to sell it, so prioritise the valuable, lightweight stuff and do not turn yourself into a pack mule in the middle of hostile territory.
Money and gun condition matter. Early on you will be poor, and the Zone is expensive. Sell what you do not need, and crucially, keep your weapons and armour repaired. A gun in bad condition jams at the worst possible moment, and a jam in a firefight is often a death sentence. Repairs and ammo will eat most of your early money, so spend carefully.
Pick your fights. You are not a one-person army, especially at the start. Use cover, use the tall grass to break line of sight, and do not wade into groups of enemies or mutants you cannot handle. Since the big A-Life overhaul the world fights its own battles, so sometimes the smartest move is to let two factions or a pack of mutants thin each other out before you move in. I covered that overhaul in the Update 1.7 report.
Choose the right difficulty for you. If you want the full hardcore survival experience, the harder difficulties, including the brutal Master mode, are where this game truly shines. But if you are brand new, there is no shame in starting a notch lower to learn the systems before you crank up the pain. If you want to see how ugly the top end gets first, watch me find out in Can I Survive STALKER 2 on the Hardest Difficulty?.
Survive those first few hours, learn to respect the Zone, and STALKER 2 becomes one of the most rewarding solo survival games out there. The atmosphere alone is worth the price of entry, once you stop dying to invisible anomalies.
