The Only Weapon You Need in STALKER 2 Free Roam

The only weapon you need in STALKER 2 free roam is the Rhino. I mean that as a loadout, not a dare. I took it out as the main gun, let the Zone do its usual living-world nonsense, and came back convinced I could stop pretending I needed a shopping trolley of rifles.

The honest caveat first, because this is a revolver. Six shots. Slow reload. You will have a moment, usually with something wet and fast already in your personal space, where the cylinder is empty and your hands are doing a Victorian loading drill. That is the tax. Ignore it and the Rhino goes from favourite toy to last words. I still run a backup for those windows. I am not a romantic.

What the Rhino actually is. On paper it is a pistol. In the Zone it is a hunting weapon that someone shrank and handed to a man with a death wish. It fires 9x39, the same family of cartridge you expect in a serious rifle, from a six-round cylinder that weighs about 1.5 kg and costs a painful stack of coupons if you buy it clean. Game8 lists the handling as sluggish and the damage as the point of the whole object. Kotaku called it the most potent sidearm in Heart of Chornobyl, and I am not going to fight them. It hits stalkers like you owe them money. It hits mutants like you remembered you do not have to be polite.

The in-game flavour text says it is marketed against African buffalo and Zone chimeras. That is the studio winking. I treated it as a joke until I stopped swapping guns.

Why it works in free roam, specifically. Campaign loadouts can be a museum. Free roam is a luggage problem. Every extra rifle is weight, repair cost, and a reason to open the inventory while someone shoots you in the thigh. The Rhino earns its slot because I stop managing a kit and start playing the Zone. One gun for the stalker on the road, the dog in the reeds, the idiot who decided I looked friendly. I showed that in The Only Weapon You Need In STALKER 2, which is just me and the Rhino walking into the usual mess and not immediately dying of indecision.

That is the test I care about. Not a DPS spreadsheet. Can I spend an afternoon in the Zone without opening the weapon wheel like a tourist?

Where to get one without turning it into a fetch quest. You can buy a Rhino from Viktoria Dorozhnyuk in STC Malachite or Wreck in Yaniv Station if you have the coupons and the patience. If you would rather find it the rude way, Kotaku’s early location is a cave north of the abandoned trucks in Yantar: stay right on the path and there is a deceased soldier who no longer needs his. There is also a unique Model Competitor variant in a journalist stash east of Yaniv Station, inside an abandoned freight car, which is the fancy cousin if you like your revolvers dressed for a funeral.

I will not pretend I discovered those stashes myself in a fever dream. I will pretend I looked smug when I finally had one.

The backup is not a betrayal. This is where people hear “only weapon you need” and decide I want them to fist-fight a Bloodsucker with an empty cylinder. No. The Rhino is the gun I use. A backup is the gun I survive the reload with. Six rounds of 9x39 will solve most arguments. The seventh argument arrives while you are still thumbing the next one in. Keep something short and rude for that window, then go back to the revolver like a person with standards.

There is a Buckshot Conversion blueprint that turns the Rhino onto .12 shells, found at the Fairytale Pioneer Camp in the Burnt Forest according to the same Kotaku write-up. Shotgun revolver is a sentence that should be illegal. I still prefer the 9x39 version for most of the map. Mutants in a phone box is when the conversion starts sounding wise.

Who this is for. If you play STALKER 2 as a gear museum, ignore me and keep the sniper, the shotgun, the rifle and the panic pistol. If you play it as free roam, if you want the Zone to feel like a place instead of a loadout screen, carry the Rhino and a backup and go looking for trouble. That is the game I have been making since I stopped treating 2.0 as a permission slip. I made that case in STALKER 2 Does Not Need An Update To Be Worth It and the longer is it worth playing report.

New to the loop and still dying to hunger and anomalies? Read beginner survival tips before you donate your first Rhino to a blind field. If you want the date on Cost of Hope and Update 2.0, that is 20 August, and the page is here. The full pile of runs lives on the STALKER 2 hub.

The verdict? The Rhino is the only weapon I need in STALKER 2 free roam. Six shots, ugly reload, no romance. Bring a backup anyway. Then go and find out whether you are as good as you think you are when the cylinder clicks empty.

FAQ

What is the only weapon you need in STALKER 2?

The Rhino. It is a 9x39 revolver with six shots and enough punch to drop stalkers and mutants without swapping to a long gun. I ran a full free-roam session with it as the main star and it carried almost everything.

Is the Rhino the best weapon in STALKER 2?

For free roam, it is the best weapon I have found that earns its inventory slot. It is not the fastest, it is not a sniper, and it is not a shotgun until you convert it. It is the one gun I stop thinking about and just use.

Where do you find the Rhino in STALKER 2?

You can buy one from Viktoria Dorozhnyuk in STC Malachite or Wreck in Yaniv Station, or pick one off a dead soldier in a cave north of the abandoned trucks in Yantar. There is also a unique Model Competitor variant in a journalist stash east of Yaniv, inside an abandoned freight car.

What ammo does the STALKER 2 Rhino use?

9x39, six rounds in the cylinder. That is rifle-grade ammunition in a pistol-shaped insult. The trade is the reload: you are standing there feeding the thing while the Zone decides whether you get to finish.

Do you need a backup gun with the Rhino?

Yes. I will die on the Rhino hill, and I will still tell you to keep a backup for the reload window. Six shots, then a slow top-up. That gap is where mutants write their memoirs.

Can you turn the Rhino into a shotgun?

Yes. The Buckshot Conversion blueprint swaps it onto .12 shells. Kotaku places that blueprint at the Fairytale Pioneer Camp in the Burnt Forest. I still prefer the 9x39 version for most of the Zone.
